Faerie Photos on the Isle of Man – John H.

We conclude our special feature from John Hall and his Faerie adventures on the Isle of Man with a series of photos.

John took all these photos himself and has kindly shared them with us here on Faerie of Ireland. Some of these images have been published in Janet Bord’s book ‘The Traveller’s Guide to Fairy Sites’ by Gothic Publications, and are also mentioned in two other of her publications. Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think….

Cheers, Kitty.

Faerie Encounter on the Isle of Man – John H.

John continues his Faerie spotting on the Isle of Man. He shares some of the old tales and his own incredible encounter with… something in the mist.

This part will feature the Fenoderee story and other tales.

The Isle of Man map with the Area of interest

Just prior to entering the upper part of the Glen via a metal gate across the rough track, we explored a field and area right a large field and trackway path going up the side of Skye hill.

Here where, this derelict and dilapidated mill building lies were figures reported last century cloaked in Blue/Grey with a Gnome like appearance. Also, some youths where chased by a woman wielding what looked like a frying pan!

A more recent sighting was two English tourists reported seeing a small woman with a white bonnet on her head or white object which she took off and used it to wave off or warn off the tourists. They fled!

Andrew Green (the Ghosthunter) in one of his books wondered if the apparition could have a Norse origin with the type of headdress?

Whatever has been seen over the years seems to change its appearance to adopt popular images eg… Cloaked Gnome, Witchlike Woman, next could be a Grey Alien?

The Old building was wooden, open and falling down. I had a camera, a pre-digital Canon 35mil with a good lens and a full roll of colour film loaded. That’s 36 frames!

The Woman or figures had been seen in the field, tackmill and the pathway, coming down from Skye Hill described in Part 1.

I noticed that a house that was the last on the lane backed onto this field and without exception all the rear windows were boarded over! Makes me wonder if it was to stop the spectacle being seen or stop something looking in!

Also, up on top of the hill something described as a “Fairy City” had been seen. Strange lights on the Mountain looking like an illuminated palace were what would be termed as Spooklights now or even a UFO.

Local people tempted in by the singing, dancing, food, fine ladies and handsome men should always exercise caution by refusing all food and drink in case they were taken /abducted. Fairy Time runs different to terrestrial time.

The “Stray sod ” or being Pixy-led is also in evidence here, when you can become lost forever going in circles until the spell is broken by turning your clothes inside out, carrying religious items, uttering prayers, and some iron or steel.

The Fairy promise of beautiful people and glittering castles, amazing food can all be the product of a” Glamour” fooling the human senses and creating a false but enticing bait for people to become entrapped. If all the gifts are refused the person when they awake will find the food was mouldy leaves, and the Palace just a clump of grass.

Back on track through the metal gate on walking upward the river to our left the hill to our right. North Barrule Mt and road to our Left now, through a wooded glen of Oak trees and Pine trees to what I originally went looking for: The Blue leafed Rowan Oak tree of the Fenoderee story (of which this Glen is known in folklore stories).

Walking up, my friend observed a mist hanging over the area, I could hear the stream over the rocks tumbling down the valley making a kind of drumming noise and a certain musical sound I couldn’t place.

I found a typical mushroom ring by the stream as we continued walking up, the walk was taking up to half an hour or more, when we came to a dip in the path by a stonewall. Directly below was a huge pool of water from a recent rainstorm.

No way through it, to carry on we’ll have to skirt around going into the little wooded area.

Now, here’s where it gets strange… I mean you go out on walks and nothing ever happens!

Sure I ‘d spent a few days prior reading up on the folklore in the Manx Museum taking notes and then selecting a suitable location that seemed interesting for a walk on a non raceday.

the General viewpoint of the Strange event experience

Just before I get to the final part, the Fenoderee story must be told now to give the proper perspective of the area. The story of how a mortal woman and a Fairy Prince meet and have a love affair in Glen Auldyn.

The woman, named Kitty Keruish, was wooed by an Otherworldly handsome man who she fell in love with. They used to meet at the Blue Rowan Tree in Glen Auldyn to be together in secret as Fairy and Mortals could not be or exist together according to tradition and this Fairy was of Royal blood and called himself “Udereek”.

He was supposed to attend a Manx Harvest home festival with all the other fairfolk at Glen Rushen across the other side of the Isle of Man. However, he did not as was meeting his lover at the Blue Rowan Tree. This was frowned upon by those of high ranking and to make an example he lost his status and was transformed into a half man- half goat. A Satyr or Pan like creature by the Fairy Council and left to roam forever in this form.

His lover had fled the Isle of Man to escape any form of retribution from the fairfolk or her own people. Now the Fenodree roamed the island alone and although in this form continued to be of help and assist humans in his hairy form: the wild man of the woods.

Several other stories have him assisting farmers and fisherman also in several other parts of the Island. There is one noteable crop-circle type deed with him stamping down the crop in fields like the Mowing Devil in the 1700’S. (Note…see the Fortean times for more info on the Mowing Devil!)

This very sad story puts the Fenoderee of Glen Auldyn right here in the Valley where he waits for his lost love timeless to him seeing watching and hiding in the wild places! Expect the Unexpected.

Taking a few pictures of the site before trying to get around the pool I noticed another mushroom ring much larger set on the embankment by the pool.

Getting down we noticed the immediate area under the trees was unusually darkened.

We could not see the hillside, just behind. The place had an eeriness to it, we felt as we were being watched by something.

No birdsong. The air was still, then a significant wind arose and we also heard something moving around in the dark area as twigs cracked. We both felt uneasy.

We were still a good way off being outside this wooded area and walked up to long deserted single story overgrown house, wondering if we had disturbed something. It didn’t feel right.

Thinking maybe we should turn around and go back now. I felt a bit strange as if I was being told to go back. A sense of panic set in. I felt a bit sick and dizzy. Head spinning. Feeling faint.

I stopped, took some more pictures, then quite suddenly a cold clammy wet feeling of something on my back which turned into icy cold spine chiller of ghoststories. What I did was try not to panic. I said to my friend “let’s go back now”, trying not to alarm her too much.

I took some photos of the area looking back at the area by the pool we just passed through. Then “we have got to go back and as quickly as possible”. I was getting some sort of transmitted message it seemed.

So back we went. It seemed to take a longer time as the path stretched out like was extending further, like the feeling when you run in a dream and the floor is like a reverse travellator.

Finally, we get back to steel white gate and get through, lock it down back on the B16 road by the end house. We carry on and stop outside the Church of St Fingan on the other side of the bridge river crossing. Here stop for breath, still feeling cold and shaken at what just happened.

My friend said “did you notice we were in a mist all the time there?”

“No” I said.

I told her why we needed to get out quick. It seemed it didn’t affect her the same.

On route back, we stopped to compare notes and write it all down. Some horses came over to us to say hello and we gave them some fresh long grass. This calmed me down.

“What was going to be on those photo’s?” I wondered.

There are two more stories that go together here.

Cloud of Darkness. – Seen by a woman going up Glen Auldyn one evening. Everything became black. She stood waiting for an hour but the cloud did not go away. She turned about to go back the way she had came to see the way down was still visible!

This happened above the bridge that was washed away (1931 flood?) some years earlier. This phenomena was also seen about 9.30pm half an hour before the woman’s experience.

A cottage stood back from the road where  a great cloud of darkness was seen. This could be the same cottage and area we experienced it, although the time was around midday.  Only later did I realise that some missing or extended time was also apparent in the experience. What should have been a 5-10 minute walk took half an hour.

john hall 4
Milntown Corner crossroads: Haunt of the Moddhey -Dhoo.

One more story.

The Wild Hunt – An old deserted Mansion which was built over a fairy path was a frequent haunt of the Wild Hunt. Seen as lights on the Mountain side, and testified by older residents of the locality.

Usually on moonlit nights, and described with innumerable horses of every description with the cry of dogs breaking cover. They mirrored a human Hunting with the dress clothing etc of the time and year seen in.

john hall 5
The muddy path and area of the experience looking up the Glen.

Conclusion – What did I come across? I don’t know as it was hidden in cloaking of darkness. The Fenoderee? Or something else you don’t want to meet: a Buggane?

The phenomena that turned me around and prevented my trip up to Snaefell also saved me and my friend from a severe weather storm that moved in over the mountain so maybe it was a friendly warning after all.

*

My most recent trip to Glen Auldyn was by myself. It was a good day and I experienced no strange encounters.

The area changed a few years back because people had taken over the derelict house right by where I had taken the particular photo (photo 8). They had renovated the house, and moved in as a family residence. The photo is currently published in this books by Janet Bord, ‘The Travellers Guide to Fairy Sites’ and mentioned in two other of her publications.

The whole atmosphere had gone. The refurbishment had spoilt the darkened embankment area. It was all torn up, and the hillside now easily visible!

I wondered if the family knew about the stories of the Glen, and if they would experience the similar things, eg Ghosts, Poltergeist, Wild Hunt, strange lights and the Fair Folk  being on a Fairy Path.

If I hadn’t had the strange feeling in that location I would have not taken the photo looking back. The roll of film I used was intact but, although I had taken a least three other shots there, it was as if the film had been rolled back as they were not on the negatives.

More missing time pixy-led confusion and things out of sync!

Had I encounted Pan in the wooded glade? The Fenoderee, with his cloaking device of darkness?

In terms of missing time: the 5-10 min walk from the gate and back took half an hour on the day I took the photo.

Vision of Banshee

My Mam was diagnosed with cancer which devastated us. cottage

My daughter, 9 years old, myself and my mother. We had lost so many to that dreaded disease that we had thought it had finished with our family.

My daughter and I stayed with Mam in a lovely bungalow beside the sea. We became her carers, with help from official NHS carers and as luck would have it, this being a small town, we knew the carer.

She became part of our little family as we helped Mam battle against the disease which wanted to take her away from us.

I’ve always believed in the good folk from an early age and told my daughter about them too.

So, one night we were all asleep when something woke my sixth sense, (don’t know what else to call it) and although my body stayed in bed I was aware of walking through to the living room.

I could hear my Mam talking but no one replying as I went through the door.

banshee8 (2)Standing in the middle of the room was a tall being all dressed in white with long grey hair.

She wasn’t quite solid and as she noticed I was there she turned and her face lengthened and her mouth and jaw opened far too wide for my liking.

I became frightened and started to say the Lord’s Prayer to the four corners of the room, as you do and I found myself back in my body and wide awake. I ran through to the living room.

It was empty, my Mam was sleeping.

Upon thinking about it, I apologise to the lady as I realised she was our banasidhe and was preparing Mam for the journey she was going to take to the Summerlands.

As I think back now, I feel blessed that I saw her and also feel safe that she is around us.

The Faerie Fern Leaf

Lunathesun shares this tale of childhood encounters. An intriguing and sudden burst of Faerie activity which seemingly began with a guided mediation and a fern leaf… curiouser and curiouser. Read on…

*

Hi this was my experience!

I was around 10 when this happened and it was actually in my house.

It all started when I found a video of a woman on youtube talking about her experience with faeries. She was talking about how they changed her life and actually started crying a bit talking about them. She later mentioned at the end of the video to visit her website. It was along the lines of ‘faeries are real’.

When I was at the website, the background looked like an old paper. Like the yellow ones you see in old books and it had fancy fonts and what not. It also mentioned that it was under renovations or something like that. fern girl (2)

In one link it said, ‘how to see faeries’. There it said a method that was written like a guided meditation. All I remember from it was visualizing a white ball that goes around the house cleaning all the bad energy and then the white ball enters your body to clean out the bad energy from you and then after comes out of your body and disperses after.

I know there was more to this but I can’t remember. Then I try finding the faeries, but it obviously didn’t work. I don’t remember how long it was until I finally got this incident but i would say in about a week.

So, one day my best friend came over we were playing in my living room. We were being kids and just running and jumping into the couch. At one point, my best friend gets up and there was a fern stuck on her lower back. I take it, confused because we were no where near any plants at the point and I didn’t see her come in with that plant. brownie2 (2)

Then I try to match it with any of the ferns in my house (which were only two of them). It matched none of them. I placed it on a tall dresser in my room in a vase. I thought it was weird, and so I forgot about it.

Then the next day I was sitting in the living room when a small elf (now I know it was was a brownie) like a foot tall ran in a zig zag line in my living room really quickly and ran under my legs and disappeared.

The next day I was going into the bathroom and I see a small orange orb floating around near my towels and I go quickly to it but it goes into my towel and disappears.

Then the next day, I’m coming out of the bathroom and on the crown molding that is in the middle of the wall that is right next to the bathroom, a blue stereotypical fairy is sitting in it.

It had blue hair and blue skin and wings. It also looked like it was watching my mom cook.

blue fairy (2)

However when I got near it, the fairy dove to the floor and the floor rippled like water. That was the craziest experience but that was my last.

The next day the fern that I placed on my dresser disappeared. I asked my mom if she took it and she said why would she take it.

It couldn’t have been my little brother because he was too short and my dad could care less. I searched for it but I couldn’t find it.

If anyone knows the website or video I’m talking about please let me know because I can’t seem to find it.

Thank you!

Fae in my Life

My name is Richard. I have been practicing witchcraft and Wicca for over 20 years.

ball of light (2)I had experiences with the Fae including those of Celtic, even before I had embraced Wicca.

The Fae folk had appeared to me in dreams, as well as in the physical world.

When I see them they appear as points of light. As well as glowing mists of light. And even as shadowy forms. shadow (2)

At times they appear in physical form either small to the size of a human.

They have become more frequent in my life. Even as I write this I sense their presence more so since it’s one of their holidays, the Summer Solstice.

Despite what some may think. They are very real. I am truly blessed that they are in my life. They and their relations.

Blessed be.

Faerie Phantom?

This is a fascinating experience. I suspect that given Simon feels this was some ‘Faerie intervention’, it probably was, but… it is difficult to explain. We would need to consider the incidence of Faerie attaching themselves to particular families and also ‘appearing’ great distances from home.
It is particularly interesting that Mary was raised in a family not only aware of the Good People, but clearly allowed the Good People into their daily lives. It’s a curious one, please let me know what you think, or if you have heard of a similar occurrence.
*
I was recently reminded of an interesting experience I had in my youth which I feel may be a time I encountered these Good People.  I feel that I may have encountered some sort of changeling… yet I would love to hear your view on this encounter.

It was many years ago, in the early 2000s.  I was fairly young and living in my home country of Australia, in the capital city of Canberra.  I had been dating a young Irish girl whom came to Australia for a holiday.  Her name was Mary and we hit it off and quickly moved in together before we planned on getting married (yes, it was a very quick romance… I think the whole issue of getting a visa played a big part in this).

Her family were very angry that she had decided to marry someone they never met, and after weeks of phone calls and letters they persuaded her to come home to Ireland for a short while before she would return for the marriage.  It was their intention to talk her out of it when she was home.

plane moon

Mary and I drove to Sydney International airport with a few of my friends who wanted to see her off too.  Mary and I said our sad goodbyes, promising to see each other again in a couple of months when she would return.  I watched her walk to the departure gate and leave.  I sadly returned to Canberra (several hours drive away) with my friends, where we decided to go out in an attempt to cheer me up and get my mind off missing Mary.

We decided to go to the movies, where we would watch a movie (funnily enough) called “Something about Mary” and we were the only people in the cinema.  After the movie, we chatted for a while as the credits rolled before my friends and I stood to leave.

cinema chairs
The cinema lights had been turned on, and we could see very well.  As we entered the aisle to leave , near the door to the cinema, stood Mary.  She stood there staring at us, wearing the same clothes we just saw her wearing when she boarded the plane, with no real expression on her face.  My friends and I stopped in the aisle when we saw her… we all looked at each other and one of them asked if that was Mary.
I told them it couldn’t be… they were with me when I dropped her off at the airport… she should be well into her flight back to Ireland.  We stood and watched her for a moment before she turned slowly and proceeded to walk to the closed door.
At this point we started to follow, she opened the door and walked through, allowing it to close behind her.  We quickly reached the door and opened it, to see her standing in the main cinema corridor (from which other cinema’s branched).
The corridor was only partially lit, yet we could see her very clearly.  She was part way up the corridor, her body sideways to us and she watched us as we left the cinema.  My friends again told me that it was Mary, yet I said that it can’t be Mary… I said that they knew as well as I did that she was on a plane, and this person was acting very strange.
blur girl (2)
We stood in silence, watching her before she moved again.  She slowly turned and walked down the corridor away from us, heading towards the large cinema at the end of the hall.  I could see as she walked, her head turned slightly every now and then to see us as she walked.  I knew she wanted me to follow her, and my friends asked if I was going to follow her.  I wanted to,,, yet I replied that I wouldn’t follow.
I knew it wasn’t my Mary… I didn’t know what it was, yet I suspected that it was not a good idea to follow this figure.
A day or two later. Mary called from Ireland to let me know she arrived home safely.  When I told her about the figure I had witnessed, she had no knowledge of this visitation we encountered… not that I thought she would.
One more interesting point… when I did meet her family they were very connected to the Faerie world.  Not a day would go by without them mentioning something about the Good People… something, at the time, I thought was very unusual.
When I think back, knowing what I do now, could it be possible that the Good People were trying to prevent Mary and I from being together?  If so, it changed little as Mary and I married later that year, although our marriage didn’t work out in the end. So who knows?
I often wonder what would have happened had I followed that “pseudo” Mary.  Would my life be more interesting?  Would I have gone to some place amazing?  Or was it some phantom creature who meant to cause me harm?
I guess I will never know.
Simon – Sydney.

The Fairy Whistle

I have never heard a tale quite like this one. Could it be the Leanan Sidhe at work?

*

We were only teenagers then. Had been on the drink after a game like. My three cousins and me, walking home at a stumble.

The oldest, I won’t tell his name, was barely walking at all. Me and my other cousins took turns half carrying him across the fields and anyway we all fell into this ditch. It was shallow enough, and we all just lay there, under a tall tree, looking up at the stars for I can’t say how long.

starry sky

The night was silent, and so were we, which I suppose was the first sign of something unusual. Then we hear this music. It was simple, a whistle I think it was. Quiet, but close. I said to my cousin who was less inebriated than the other two “Do you hear that?”. He says “I do”. There was no one around for miles. My cousins’ house the only one nearby.

We listened for a time. All four of us. It was the most beautiful tune, played over and again. Almost had me in a daze. Then I shot up and realized we were laying our backs against the side of a fairy ring. I knew it well in daylight and wouldn’t go near it then. So, I upped and got them moving again.

peak-district-1350153 (2)

Well we got home no trouble and next day recalled the whistle we heard. We all four of us remembered it the same but swore not to mention it to our Mam’s for fear they’d tear strips off us for being foolish enough to sit on a fairy fort. But that tune, it was lighter and sweeter than anything I’d heard before or since.

Now you’ll be expecting me to tell you some terrible bad luck befell the four of us soon after. Well it didn’t. We were fine. In fact, I suppose you could say we were better than fine. For a time.

Each of us grew and spread our wings. My cousins each excelled in their field of interest. It’s not for me to tell their names but one was a successful multimedia artist in the city, another was a regarded musician who had traveled the world and the last was a history teacher who published several books on Fairy Folklore.

I say was because all 3 are passed now. Suddenly and every one before their 30th birthday. They each lived a short, bright life and I too have enjoyed a surprising measure of success in my own field.

In the end, we only saw each other at funerals. We’d look at each other with these eyes you know. Now there’s only me left. Well anyway, the thing is, I turn 30 myself next year and find myself wondering about that fairy fort, and the whistle we heard that night. And I wonder what awaits me.

Michael – Ireland.

I received a follow-up email from Michael and he asked me to add a curious detail which he forgot to include in his own account. Michael says that since that night, when he and his cousins lay back on the wall of the fairy fort, none of the 4 men ever experienced a sleeping dream. Ever again. Make of that what you will. If you have a theory on this, or how it relates to his extraordinary tale, I would love to hear it.

I wish Michael all the very best and thank him again for sharing.

Cheers, Kitty.
